Height and spacing should answer a view problem, a safety or access requirement, and the scale of the setting. Begin with observation and verification rather than a copied dimension.
Create a boundary walk
Walk the proposed line in both directions. Photograph each change in grade, adjacent structure, tree, path, utility area, and important view. Repeat the walk from the places where people sit, enter, garden, or look out from inside.
A simple annotated plan and a sequence of eye-level photos are more useful than one front elevation. They reveal where the boundary needs to screen, open, turn, step, or make room.
- Mark verified property information and easements.
- Record ground level changes instead of assuming a flat line.
- Locate gates, drainage, utilities, and maintenance access.
- Identify views to block, filter, frame, and preserve.
Mock up the top edge
Use temporary poles, tape, cardboard, or another safe nonstructural marker to understand the apparent height from key viewpoints. The purpose is visual evaluation, not construction layout.
Check the mock-up at different distances and from neighboring or public-facing views where appropriate. A height that feels comfortable from a patio may dominate a narrow side path or street corner.

Model gaps from an angle
Straight-on spacing tells only part of the story. As the viewing angle becomes shallower, boards overlap visually and a partly open fence can appear more solid. Grade and eye height also change what is visible through the same gap.
Test samples at the likely viewing angles. If alternating or offset boards are considered, review both sides and the shadow pattern as well as the direct sightline.
Resolve transitions before selecting details
Identify where height, transparency, material, or direction changes. Align those transitions with gates, walls, corners, or shifts in landscape use. Arbitrary changes tend to look like repairs rather than design decisions.
Then verify local height and visibility rules, pool or safety requirements, structural needs, manufacturer limits, and utility procedures. These can change the visual plan and must be resolved with qualified sources.
Treat the visual direction as a hypothesis. Verify it against the real boundary, local requirements, manufacturer guidance, and qualified advice before work begins.
